One thing to keep note of is that the first Overwatch was a $40 title, whereas Overwatch 2 is a free-to-play title. This certainly affected the overall player increase for the sequel.
Mike Ybarra, president of Blizzard, spoke about the success in a statement (via VGC). He said: “The launch of Overwatch 2 has been such an important moment for Blizzard. We’re thrilled to bring new players from around the world into Overwatch’s vibrant universe while welcoming back the existing Blizzard community.”
“This is only the beginning—there are so many possibilities to explore in the world of Overwatch, and we cannot wait for players to experience everything the team is building for the live game.”
During its first few days, the title had numerous problems. Most of these stem from the long queue, DDoS attacks and minor bugs. However, as of writing this, Blizzard addressed most of these problems actively.
Overwatch 2 is available to play for free on PC via Battle.net, Xbox, PlayStation and Nintendo Switch.
