Nintendo officially revealed the sequel to the 2017 game in 2019, calling it The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Sequel. The reason behind that was the Japanese developer trying to keep the hints about the plot a secret.
Two years later, we finally officially know the name of the upcoming title. In Nintendo Direct last night, the developers revealed the name of the sequel, called The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. The game also got its official release date, launching on May 12, 2023.
Earlier, Nintendo announced plans of releasing the game sometime this year. However, Nintendo later pushed back the release date to Spring 2023. Nintendo announced the information through a short 1+minute trailer, which shows Link climbing a tall rock and dropping down from the sky.
The upcoming title originally started as DLC ideas for the first Switch title, which later changed to a full-fledged game. The last time we heard anything about the title was in 2021. Nintendo back then revealed some actual gameplay footage for the title.
Nintendo didn’t reveal any additional information during the Direct. However, we can expect more about the title in the upcoming months, now that there is an actual release date.
