Last month, Atlus confirmed their famous JRPG series Persona heading to non-PlayStation platforms and PS5. Releasing in October, people can play the enhanced version of Persona 5 on PC, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox.
While this is the first time the game will release for other platforms, PlayStation 4 already got Persona 5 Royal in 2020, which is the original platform for the game. Naturally, PlayStation 5 users who own a copy have been wondering if there will be a next-gen upgrade option. Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem so.

As per the FAQ page of the title’s Japanese website (via VGC), the publisher, Atlus, mentions that PS4 owners who want to play the title on PS5 will need to purchase the title again.
The entirety of the website is in Japanese, but as per the translations, the response reads:
We are sorry, but there are no products for PlayStation 4 purchasers of Persona 5 Royal for this title,” reads a loose translation. We would appreciate it if you could purchase Persona 5 Royal for PlayStation 5, when you play the game on PlayStation 5.
It is absurd for the company to do this, given that upgrade options or free upgrades are a thing. However, this is not the first time the Japanese developer and publisher pulled off something absurd. Atlus is well known for its antics with platform choices and games, such as the decision to release the upcoming Persona 4 Golden and Persona 3 Portable on PlayStation 4, not PlayStation 5.
Persona 5 Royal is the enhanced version of the hit JRPG Persona 5. The new version contains a new character, extended gameplay time, and additional content.
