For those of you who may not be familiar, Martha is Dead is a gripping psychological thriller set in Tuscany, Italy, during World War II. The game follows the story of two sisters, Martha and Giulia, whose lives are forever changed when Martha is found dead in a nearby lake. As you journey through the game, you’ll unravel the mystery surrounding Martha’s death and uncover dark secrets lurking beneath the surface.

If you enjoyed this mind-blowing masterpiece and are seeking similar experiences, we have compiled a list of some of the top games that provide similarly deep and compelling storytelling, exciting enigmas, and spine-tingling action.  So, put on your detective hat and get ready to immerse yourself in the eerie and atmospheric worlds that these games have to offer. Trust us; your inner thrill-seeker will thank you.

1. What Remains of Edith Finch

I just finished playing What Remains of Edith Finch, and I have to say, it’s one of the most captivating games I’ve played in a while! Let me tell you a bit about the game’s plot and my overall review. The game revolves around a young woman named Edith Finch, who returns to her family’s ancestral home after many years away. The house is full of secrets, and as Edith explores the various rooms and hidden passageways, she uncovers the tragic stories of her ancestors.

What makes the game so unique is the way each family member’s story is told. You’ll play through a series of mini-games that are all different and unique, ranging from exploring underwater as a sea creature to swinging on vines as a comic book character. Each story is like a puzzle piece, fitting together to reveal the bigger picture of the Finch family’s history.

2. The Vanishing of Ethan Carter

The player takes on the role of detective Paul Prospero in The Vanishing of Ethan Carter, who is sent to a tiny village to look into the disappearance of a young kid named Ethan Carter. A sinister and intriguing tale with many turns awaits you as you explore the town and its environs. The visuals and setting of this game are just remarkable. The wide environment of the game is stunning, and the developers’ dedication to detail is impressive.
Exploring the town’s abandoned mines and woodlands will make you feel as if you’re truly there. But the game’s narrative is what makes it stand out. The more you look around, the more you’ll learn about Ethan’s disappearance and the sinister secrets the town has been keeping.

3. Firewatch

Firewatch takes place in 1989, and you play as a man named Henry, who has taken a job as a fire lookout in the Shoshone National Forest in Wyoming. As you explore the forest and perform your duties as a lookout, you’ll uncover a mystery that’s full of twists and turns. What sets this game apart is its stunning graphics and immersive environment. The game’s world is simply breathtaking, with beautiful vistas and a sense of isolation that’s both peaceful and haunting. The music is also fantastic, adding to the overall immersive experience.
It’s a game that’s all about the relationship between Henry and his supervisor, Delilah. The two characters communicate via walkie-talkie, and the more you talk to Delilah, the more you’ll uncover the mystery in the forest.

4. Layers of Fear

In Layers of Fear, you play as an artist who’s working on his masterpiece. As you explore your mansion and complete various puzzles, you’ll uncover the story of the artist’s tragic past and the events that led to his descent into madness. The game’s world is hauntingly beautiful, with each room of the mansion being uniquely creepy and unsettling. The music and sound effects add to the overall feeling of dread, and the jump scares are executed in a way that’s both terrifying and satisfying.
The game’s narrative is not straightforward, but rather it’s told through various clues and items that you’ll find as you explore the mansion. It’s a game that rewards exploration, and the more you uncover, the more you’ll understand about the artist’s tragic past.

5. Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice

The story is told through a combination of in-game visuals and narrations, as well as through Senua’s own hallucinations and flashbacks. The gameplay of Senua’s Sacrifice is a combination of exploration, combat, and puzzle-solving. Combat is intense and visceral, with a focus on evasion and timing. Puzzle-solving is varied and challenging, requiring players to use their wits and observation skills to progress. One of the most unique aspects of Senua’s Sacrifice is the way it handles mental illness. The game is an incredibly accurate portrayal of what it’s like to suffer from mental illness, and it doesn’t shy away from the challenges that come with it.

The game’s use of binaural audio and 3D sound design also creates an immersive experience that truly brings players into Senua’s world. The game’s visuals and sound design are breathtaking, and the combat and puzzle-solving mechanics are challenging and rewarding.
