The year 2022 no longer belongs to Elden Ring in terms of U.S. video game sales. The NPD Group reports that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has taken over the top spot.
Modern Warfare 2 continues to dominate the tangible retail list in November, even with new releases like God of War: Ragnarök, Pokémon Scarlet, Violet, and Sonic Frontiers. The NPD Group survey also mentions that Modern Warfare 2 is the year’s best-selling video game; however, it doesn’t specify how many copies have been sold. As of September, we found out that 17.5 million Elden Ring pieces had been distributed, so we know it’s at least that much.
Has Defeated Both Black Ops and Elden Ring
Modern Warfare 2 not only outsold Black Ops 2 as 2022’s best-selling video game in the United States, but it also set a new record for the quickest Call of Duty game. In an effort to appease authorities attempting to block its acquisition with Activision, Microsoft proposed bringing the Call of Duty property to Nintendo.
We shouldn’t feel too terrible about Elden Ring, however; it’s still From Software’s fastest-selling title and the best-seller of all history. It also swept the board at yesterday night’s The Game Awards, when it was named Game of the Year among its many other honors. Director Miyazaki has said that more Expansion for Elden Ring is in the works, so don’t expect the series to end with the Colosseum upgrade.
The NPD study also highlights a jump in US console sales, which increased 45 percent year over year to a sum of $1.3 billion. When comparing unit shipments and dollar volume, the PlayStation 5 easily outsold the Nintendo Switch. Purchases of the PS5 have been disappointing since its debut in November 2020, and not due to a dearth of interest from consumers.
Sony’s supply chain troubles meant that the company couldn’t crank out enough PlayStation 5 consoles, leading to persistent shortages at retail outlets. At this month’s PlayStation Partner Awards, PlayStation chairman Jim Ryan said that the company had finally been able to address the production problems that had been plaguing the company.
