Sunday, more like a day to tell your brain to just go and chill at the beaches of LA. however one thing always got me interested is that what is the psyche of a person and how one prepares to play a character.
I have done my fair share of research, playing different characters over many prominent servers both in the sub-continent as well as International, and each time the story writing of a character is equally important.
The role of backstory in GTA RP in NoPixel India
I spoke to a bunch of YouTubers and role players and they had different views regarding backstory, I will be presenting their views as well. Before anything, I just want to emphasize that this article is just my opinion and not a fact.
The question is how do you decide what character you want to play? If that is tedious wait till you come up with how do you decide on the arc? The fact that there are role players like Zen and Sonam who absolutely defy the concept of arc altogether is even more confusing, we will come up to that later.
Now before any of this, why should I even bother about writing my character backstory this is where many upcoming role players are freckled, and the need of having a backstory seems pointless. The questions need to be answered so here is the answer, to fill a void.
No matter whether in NoPixel India or any roleplay server, you live in present, and having a written backstory will enable your character to get special skills and traits like a mechanic or maybe a pilot? These things do not come up as a package and these are your acquired skills, the backstory depending on how aesthetically you define your past can help you in defining how you want to make your character and also it will help you in developing your mindset as a character. Your backstory is kind of your manual to play your character if put in layman’s terms.
Now let’s discuss two people who have cracked the code of having a hybrid arc and have managed to get their fellow role players confused, talking Zen and Sonam both spoke about it, while Sonam took a different approach to play her character in NoPixel India, “Dr. Sonam” since she gave a decent amount of information about herself, one of them being a Botanical Doctor among others, this, in turn, gave her access to SOTW since she has made her character so credible, on the other hand, Zen told me that he made a character that inhibited a little bit of his real-life frank attitude and rest everything opposite to his real-life personality.
For Zen, what decided the backstory was the need to have something traumatic happen to his character, unlike most people whose family was killed he set out on something less emotional but more detrimental to his character’s psyche because when someone kills your family at the most you’d be angry, looking for revenge but when someone tries to bury you alive, there’s only vengeance to be adhered to, nothing else matters but the pursuit of answers to the questions that were left buried with his character to be forgotten but not driven by the need to exert revenge and the fact that this hybrid arc of secretly going good to bad works so well aesthetically. In the city of NoPixel India, both Zen and Sonam stand out because of the way they behave, thanks to the backstory that they have created.
In a nutshell, if you want to do a proper role-play, having a backstory is important so that you can have a base after all which house has stood tall without a floor.
Thanks to the contribution of Roger, Sonam, Zen, and Area-13 I could understand better about this topic.
