An unexpected revelation during The Game Awards 2022 unveiled the upcoming action-adventure title Hellboy Web of Wyrd, modeled on the popular Dark Horse graphic of the same name. The 2019 film that revived Guillermo del Toro’s two Hellboy films has mostly removed the character from the public consciousness. But Hellboy author Mike Mignola’s publications are still coming out every few months, as well as Hellboy Web of Wyrd hopes to cash in on that.
It’s been a while since the last Hellboy movie, but it’s been even longer since the last Hellboy video game came out. There have been two significant video game adaptations of the Hellboy franchise, namely Hellboy: Dogs of the Night as well as Hellboy: The Science of Evil. Launched in 2000 and 2008 consecutively, the two were both severely criticized. Perhaps this explains why a fresh Hellboy title hasn’t been produced since Injustice 2 as well as Brawlhalla both have Devil-Man as a playable character.

However, Hellboy: Web of Wyrd intends to restart the Hellboy series from the beginning. The title is an action-adventure in which gamers use Hellboy’s Right Hand of Doom as well as Good Samaritan rifles to fight against otherworldly foes. While we don’t have specifics yet, we may guess Hellboy will employ a rogue-lite aspect in its confrontations. Hopefully, each excursion will stand on its own as an exciting and novel experience.
Hellboy: Web of Wyrd’s narrative, however, should fill in some of the blanks. Hellboy plans to investigate a mysterious structure called The Butterfly House, which has several entrances connecting to The Wyrd. Hellboy will investigate The Wyrd for clues on The Butterfly House as well as a kidnapped B.P.R.D. agent. It’s safe to conclude that there are more sinister mysteries buried there than even Hellboy could imagine.
Trailer But No Release Date
Just looking at the release video for Hellboy: Web of Wyrd, the excellent cell-shaded visuals stick out. Mike Mignola’s distinctive coloring technique, which features massive blacked-out parts on every issue of the Hellboy comic, is a big reason for the book’s success. The cell-shading used in Hellboy: Web of Wyrd is an attempt to emulate this look, and although it’s not a perfect match, it does produce a suitably eerie and murky mood.
As disappointing as it is, Hellboy: Web of Wyrd’s unveiling at The Game Awards did not include any release date details. In any case, the Switch joined the other main platforms where the new release will be available. More episodes of Hellboy: Web of Wyrd are likely to be released during the year 2023.
