Square Enix is one of the most reputed Japanese publishers in the gaming world. The publisher and developer are known for some of their most influential works. These include titles such as Final Fantasy, and Chrono Trigger, among many others. With their game loved by many, over the years the company’s focus has shifted towards other avenues, notably NFTs. These have put the company under scrutiny by the community.

A look at the company’s 2022 annual report gives some great insight into the happenings of the organization. As per the report, Square Enix claims that their big three titles have managed to sell around 294 million copies combined.

A detailed breakdown of these games shows that Final Fantasy sold 173 million copies. This number includes global package shipments and digital sales. For Dragon Quest, the franchise sold 85 million copies in global package shipments and digitally. Finally, Kingdom Hearts sold 38 million copies globally, including boxed packages and digital sales.

Naturally, all three titles have a game in development, with Final Fantasy waiting for its sixteenth release, Dragon Quest waiting for its twelfth release and Kingdom Hearts waiting for its fourth mainline title release.

In a recent company overview, the CEO of Square Enix, Yosuke Matsuda, stressed the importance of appealing to the global market. Matsuda said that competing solely in the Japanese market is difficult in the current year. Hence, they must produce successful titles that connect with the global market.

In a more recent Square Enix happening, the company recently sold off the entirety of its Europe studio to Embracer Group for 300 million dollars.
