Nintendo’s Super Mario Bros is arguably one of the greatest video game series out there. The series not only popularized the platformer genre of games but also became the cornerstone of Nintendo’s success over the years. Not only that, Mario and his friends have easily turned into a well-known pop-culture phenomenon.
Naturally, Nintendo would try bringing the Italian plumber to the silver screens. While the live-action attempt from the 90s failed miserably, Nintendo would shake hands with American animation studio Illumination to create an animated Super Mario movie.
After many key character art and size comparison images leaked online, Nintendo and Illumination officially launched the Super Mario Bros. movie trailer for the world to watch.
The trailer showcases most of the characters the movie will introduce, such as Donkey Kong, Princess Peach, Luigi and more. The trailer was dropped during a special Nintendo Direct.
In the new Super Mario Bros. trailer, we see Mario going up against Donkey Kong, Bowser interrogating Luigi about Mario’s whereabouts and more. This trailer officially unveils characters who will make their big-screen animated debut. It also shows a Mario-Kart-inspired scene.

Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri introduced the trailer and talked about the voice of Peach, Anya Taylor-Joy.
“It was important for us to work with performers who could inhabit a wide range of emotions to connect with audiences on the big screen,” he said.
“Anya brings another dimension to this character, whether she’s leading her Toads or going head-to-head against the King of the Koopas.”
Nintendo also shared a message from Seth Rogen, the voice of Donkey Kong in the movie before the trailer aired.
“For my entire life, I’ve been a fan of the worlds created by Miyamoto-san,” he said. “My dog is named Zelda.
“Ever since I was a kid playing PlayChoice-10 I remember looking at Mario Bros and thinking: ‘If they ever make a movie out of this, I better be in it.’ And I’m happy to say that dream came true. I thank you, and Zelda does too.”
The Super Mario Bros. Movie will launch on April 2023 in Theatres. Check out the entirety of the Nintendo Direct below.
