The Dying Light series’ creator, Techland, revealed today that Tencent, a Chinese corporation, will be buying the majority of the business. Techland’s intention to make Dying Light, the greatest zombie game and meet gamers’ expectations for their next fantasy open-world action RPG required working with like-minded partners, according to a statement published by the creator and CEO, Pawe Marchewka.
They looked for powerful partners who could assist their mission with their expertise, experience, and skills. Tencent ultimately won the partnership and, as was already reported, purchased the bulk of Techland. Established in 1991, Techland has launched games like Dying Light, Call of Juarez Gunslinger, and God’s Trigger. Additionally, the company engages in game publishing and distribution.
What do we know about Tencent acquiring Techland?
Techland will maintain complete ownership of its Intellectual Properties, creative autonomy, and operational independence under the leadership of Paweł Marchewka as CEO. The partnership with Chinese behemoth Tencent will let them expand quickly and realize its vision for new releases.
Tencent’s investment in various video game studios, including Riot Games, Turtle Rock Studios, Funcom, and Sumo Group, aligns with its previous ventures. The conglomerate has also made significant investments in other companies and development studios like Epic Games, Bloober Team, FromSoftware, and Platinum Games.
In its first month of sales, Dying Light 2, the most recent game from Techland, sold five million copies. The first Dying Light, released in 2015, has sold an astounding 20 million copies, which is incredible. Techland is currently in the works to create an open-world fantasy action RPG. The people involved are a number of ex-CD Projekt Staff. No name for the title has been announced yet.
In the gaming sector, Tencent has been aggressively acquiring acquisitions. The Chinese corporation acquired Wake Up Interactive and Sumo Group in 2022. On December 2022 they also disclosed their intentions to buy Turtle Rock Studios, the studio behind Left 4 Dead.
